Flight Authority
Key Concept: A clear and useful contract with the pilot
The flight authority form is a one page summary of flight data that acts as a contract between the operator, the instructor and the pilot or student. The particulars are adapted for each operator. The data is automatically generated by FleetCaptain when an aircraft is assigned. Operational limitations, such as the minimum departure fuel and maximum allowable fuel (which depend on flight duration and weight and balance) are indicated so that the pilot can – with certainty – verify the fuel on board is acceptable during the pre-flight inspection. Defects, time of day constraints etc., are all clearly shown so the pilot has a handy reference. There is a place to record air time, flight time and final fuel level. The pilot uses the flight authority form as a one-stop reference for weight and balance, maintenance condition, acceptable fuel level, defects, end of civil daytime and whether and under what conditions spins are allowed. All the data is shared and signed off leaving no uncertainty about the aircraft condition or the pilot’s intentions.
